The Pitfalls of Testing
Many who come to work with me have been suffering from gut issues for years – some up to 20 to 30 years in fact. They have tried all sort of diets, supplements, and advice from experts and friends. Many things will give them relief for a short while, but soon they are back to where they started. Some even worse.
This is the main reason I rely on various forms of functional testing in my clinic – my clients are sick of guessing. Instead, they want clear answers, with a clear path forward. And I understand where they are coming from having walked that path myself. Yes, testing can be costly. But the cost likely pales in comparison to what they have spent over the years, let alone the impact or cost of the stress, heartache, frustration. Therefore, I consider testing to be one of the more important tools in my clinic.
If you aren’t testing, you are guessing
I am seeing a new issue arise from the easily accessible and varied nature of testing available. Many companies are offering functional testing direct to people, bypassing the need for a practitioner altogether. This leaves me a bit torn, to be honest.
On one hand, I am glad that people are taking control of their health. I often see people just simply relying on the advice of so-called experts and influencers. Or worse yet, accepting that there is nothing more that can be done. I encourage and applaud those that do their research and seek out better answers, better health.
On the other hand, though, a test is only as good as the ability to interpret the results and implement a workable treatment plan. And this needs to include not just the results themselves as the symptoms presented. And, every test has its advantages and disadvantages, which you really should know before you order.
Therefore, I recommend you seek the advice of a professional before you start ordering tests.
There may be better tests available, or you may need to order a specific type of test. The prep before a test, mediations, supplements, activities can alter, and even invalidate, the results. In some cases, your symptoms may be such that only certain tests are needed. This conversation can save you hundreds if not thousands of dollars.
The issue is that the testing company is not likely to readily volunteer the shortcomings of their test. They may not have a vested interest in your treatment, they simply want you to buy the test. Your friends and family want you to get better, but they may lack the knowledge as to the testing options available to be able to truly help you. Your fellow sufferers may not have the same issues as you do, even if you share the same label, such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Their path is not the same as yours.
A practitioner will be vested in your health outcome, and your health goals alone. Please continue to do your research, ask the questions, but know that a skilled practitioner to answer questions, ask questions you have not yet thought of that can likely save you money and time. Seek out professional help and support to make your gut healing journey easier and more effective.
